COUNDON COURT / COVENTRY ALLIANCE FOOTBALL LEAGUE
CCOBFC 3 Massey Ferguson 0
Playing a friendly against Premier League Midland Combination was
an opportunity to view the new signings. Clearly the combination of Martin
and Iniss up front is impressive in its speed of thought, pace and scoring
power. Dave Drennan in midfield is tirelss in his running and accurate
in his passing and along with Ward should be a creative force. McGregor
at the back is a tower of subtle stength and experience. The victory will
do much to give the side a confidence to start the assault on the Premier
title.

19th August 2006
Coundon Court Old Boys 1 Bulkington 4
On a finely cut pitch beneath a late summer's sun, the Old Boys managed
to field a side with only Matt Casey remaining from last year's successful
1st. Team.
The rest had departed to other local teams. Seemingly it was not enough
to have been the first team to have played and won at the Ricoh or to
be part of a progressive, friendly club celebrating its 25th. anniversary
season. What price loyalty some would ask. Without last year's successful
managers too, the Old Boys have had to work doubly hard to generate the
number of players needed to field two sides. And by dint of outstanding
commitment and collective effort so far they have succeeded. It remains
to be seen if they can maintain their position in the Premier.
On this display against a very mediocre Bulkington side, the Obs showed
signs that all is not lost. Although the opponents fully deserved their
victory, the scorelins did not reflect the true balance of the game where
in the last twenty minutes of the first half and the first twenty of the
second the Obs matched the Bulkington performance. After two bad defensive
errors the Obs managed to grab a lifeline when awarded a penalty which
Paul Davis dispatched with
aplomb. But in spite of a fight back with both Gareth Coleman and Matt
Casey outstanding in defence and new signing Lee Francis a tireless force
up front, the Obs could not grab the initiative. However there were positive
signs especially with young Arron McFadyen showing considerable promise.
22 August (H)
Coundon Court 1 Woodlands 3
With the Alliance Ground Committee in attendance and in addition the meticulously
fastidious Mr. Ramsay as referee, the odds were all against the Old Boys
let alone playing against a Woodlands team made all the stronger by recruits
from Bedworth Ex. And so it was to prove. But this was a better performance
all round. With the Knight twins back in harness and the welcome appearnance
of Frankie Bennett and Wayne Shanks the recruitment stakes were looking
up. In addition a new goalkeeper Wayne Bowes was making his debut with
Chris, another keeper ,looking on and waiting for his chance.Managers
Ricky Smith and Paul
Davis were hoping for a better performance and they got it. But a FORTUNATE
FAR POST FLICK FROM A CORNER with no one on the post set the trend and
was followed by another from a corner. But this was an encouraging performance
especially in the second half when three nil down. The Old Boys bucked
up their ideas and started to play some attractive football.Sub Paul O'Dwyer
( friend of Ronan McKinlay) scored a beauty, the tackling was keener,
the spirit
more on display. Casey and Haymes battled hard, Jones showed fine touches
and the twins worked tirelessly. But man -of -the- match had to be Wayne
Dowes in goal who pulled off some miraculous saves and fully deserve the
applause around the ground.
26th August 2006
Coundon Court Old Boys 1 Alvis 1
In a pulsating game played with sporting passion by both sides, Coundon
Court Old Boys decimated by the departure of nine of last year's successful
squad, produced a performance of burgeoning quality which augurs well
for the coming season. In goal Wayne Bowes yet again gave a masterly display
producing a fine save in the second half to thwart a temporarily dominant
Alvis team.He was ably supported by sweeper Craig Coleman whose fine distribution
and positional play reflected a welcome return to form. In midfield the
evergreen Frankie Bennett was tireless in the tackle and elegant in his
passing. Newboy Paul O'Dwyer linked well with Isherwood and Francis up
front and significantly his direct running produced the opportunity for
Isherwood to claim his first Premier goal. However, a first win for the
Old Boys was frustrated when an Alvis free kick outside the box sliced
through the defensive wall to make it all square.
Managers Ricky Smith and Paul Davis were encouraged by the improved performance.
Smith commented:
"Gathering a team together in such a short time has been a real challenge
but there is a fabulous spirit in the side and in fact throughout the
whole club. We really played as a team; the passing was crisper, the workrate
tireless and the overall attitude so positive."
29th August 2006
Coundon Court OBFC 3 Folly Lane 2
The OBs claimed their first win and three valuable points over old rivals
Folly Lane at the Northbrook in this midweek evening game. The opponents
have always proved to be the club's bogey team over the years but not
so last night.
The team was up for it for the first whistle. The current side plucked
from last year's second team with the addition of six other "outsiders"
have gelled as a team. They support each other, tenacious in the tackle,
running into space, encouraging, fighting for every ball. Ably led by
captain Matt Casey ( congrats on birth of daughter Freya!!!),the team
has responded to the perceptive management of Ricky Smith and Paul Davis.
And it shows. There is a sense of enjoyment and respect for each player.
Front man Lee Francis improves with every game. His pace and developing
positional play are becoming a test for any defence. Sprinting down the
left he met a cross from the right and forced the ball home for the Obs
to take a deserved lead.
Encouraged, the Obs continued to dominate and from thirty yards out an
astute free kick from dead ball expert Craig Coleman saw the keeper misjudge
the subtle flight of the ball which hit the top right hand corner of the
net. The Lane got one back which the usually reliable Bowes tipped into
his own net. But within minutes the Obs capitalised on the first-half
impetus to claim a penalty which star man Trevor (the hair) Knight slotted
in with easy aplomb.
But the Lane upped their game pulling a goal back from a free kick. They
intensified their attacks putting the OBs under intense pressure which
became all the more
persistent when Phil Kinght was dismissed from the pitch for alleged foul
play.
In a nail bitting finale Bowes brought off magnificent saves as the heroic
defence held firm. But tonight they were all heroes as the Obs came off
the pitch knowing that they had played their hearts out and maintained
the smiles on the managers' faces.
2nd September 206
Coundon Court Old Boys' FC 2 Stockton 4 Stan Oulds
Cup
In this repeat of last year's final, Stockton were victors again aided
considerably by the wind in the first half when they scored three goals.
The Old Boys were without their regular keeper with midfield key player
Jones taking over, and without both Coleman in the centre of midfield
along with O'Dwyer in attack. The resulting imbalance was plain to see
producing a vastly different and bland display in contrast to the blood
and guts performance during the week against Folly Lane.
But at least in the second half the OBs started to play with some degree
of coherence. Prompted by wily Frankie Bennett and the immaculate passing
of Craig Coleman theOBs responded with two fine goals from a more hard-working
Isherwood. The Obs finished well and provided manager Ricky Smith with
further optimism:
"We need a settled side in order to produce a more consistent and
fluent all round pattern of play. There were a number of good individual
performances especially from young Jamie Hall who came on in the second
half and battled for every ball."
5th September 2006
Coundon Court Old Boys FC 0 Christ the King 2
How can managers cope when phoned by four players during the afternoon
of an evening game cry off because of injury?? This included the whole
attack, centre half and the keeper. In addition with Frankie Bennett injured
and the reserve keeper not yet arrived the team was a goal down within
five minutes. Such is the life of a manager. It is difficult to believe
that the Phoenix is still rising after the fire at the Northbrook but
such is the OBs' spirit that a young side represented the club and did
the club proud especially in the second half. Here Jamie Hall was outstanding
probing the defence and running himself into the ground. In particular
too mention should be made about young Loz Woodruff who battled so valiantly
throughout his time on the pitch and yet all were heroes again tonight
and had it not been for two defensive lapses and again some incomprehensible
decisions by both linesmen and referee, the OBS could have gained points
from the game against their old rivals. Optimism still abides in the hearts
of the players and managers. We will survive!!!!!!
10th September 2006
Coundon CourtOBFC 1 Brooklands Jaguar 1
So there is a God! Only a few weeks ago we wondered if we could
raise a side when from a squad of sixteen 1st. team players fourteen departed
along with the two managers. But it's an ill wind....... the loyal hearted
players from the second team along with new, young recruits have been
blended into a passionate outfit under the leadership of manager Ricky
Smith. With the example of wily Frankie Bennett playing with all the subtlety
and verve of one half his age, the team has responded dramatically developing
a controlled, collective discipline and above all a desire to win against
all the odds.
Against the Premier division leaders the OBs were able to field a
stronger side than the one beaten during the week by Christ the King.
New signing Stuart Rhodes and Loz Woodroff were subs along with veteran
Wayne Shanks. It is always a "cup final" between the OBs and
local rivals Brookies and so it was to prove. In the opening exchanges
the substantial crowd witnessed crunching tackles with no quarter given
with both sides vying for dominance. \It was against the run of play when
a fierce cross from the right was headed into his own goal by Craig Coleman.
However, the OBs ' resolve
was intensified as they pressed for the equaliser. Tireless running from
the OBs' front man Lee Francis and midfield dynamo Trevor Knight brought
about the deserved equaliser when Craig Coleman turned his marker and
fired in a fiercely struck left foot shot which the Brookies' keeper could
only parry and help into the net. In the second half Gareth Coleman and
Lee Francis buth succumbed to scything tackles and were replaced by Rhodes
and Woodroff, the latter being unlucky not to clinch the game with a diving
header in the last minute.
Manager Ricky Smith was delighted with the performance: " It was
terrific to witness the spirit out there today. They all gave 110% which
typifies what Coundon Court Old Boys is all about. And when we heard that
the reserves had won their first game it just put the icing on the cake.
"
Coundon Court OBFC Reserves 3 Bedworth Ex 1
First game, first win for the reserves and an ecstatic manager Paul Davis.
With young Chris Lampitt making his debut in goal along with new signings
Smith, McKeown and McFadyen, the OBS fuly deserved their victory. Showing
considerable character this blend of experience and youth played some
quality football. Consistent pressure brought goals from Paul Davis with
a twenty yard free kick, a left foot rocket from McFadyen into the far
corner and to cap it all a well-judged chip from veteran Tom King.
"A wonderful team performance," said Manager Paul Davis."It
was great to see young McKewon the son of one of our long-standing players
playing up front. All the youngsters did well and created a great sporting
atmosphere."
GREAT ATMOSPHERE 16th September 2006
CCOBFC 4 Peugeot 2 (A)
Playing away for the second successive week The OBs put on another passionate
display of both attacking and defensive play. Perhaps the key to this
outstanding victory was the inclusion of an experienced goalkeeper in
Carl Pyket who brought off a number of match-saving point blank stops.
His confident command of his area along with his perceptively accurate
kicking gave a further boost to this rapidly improving squad whose confidence
is growing every game.It was pleasing too to welcome back John Finn after
a season's absence.
The opening exchanges were fairly even with Coundon gaining the upper
hand through their good use of the wings and quick passing. Isherwood's
speed created an opportunity for Francis who opened the scoring with a
firm drive. The OBs maintained the momentum and driving from midfield
Gareth Coleman forced his way past two defenders to lash home his first
goal of the season. But Peugeot fought back with two quick goals exposing
gaps in the usually sound Coundon defence.
Stand-in manager Martin McKeown changed the tactics for the second half
and immediately produced the desired improvement. Frankie Bennett put
the OBs into the lead with an scintillating chip over the Peugeot keeper
and Gareth Coleman claimed his brace as he fired in an unstoppable shot
to crown his man-of-the-match performance.
The team left the pitch with smiles on their faces. They had enjoyed the
performance and it showed.
Manager McKeown commented:" Who would have thought we could play
like this a few weeks ago. It's great to see the lads play for each other
and give encouragement throughout the game. We're beginning to work as
a unit and develop a pattern
to our play. Carl Pyket was brilliant in goal and gave the whole team
a boost."
Coundon Court OBFC Reserves 4 Stockton 6
Cruising 3-0 up with a hat-trick from rookie Loz Woodfuff the OBs
increadibly allowed a determined Stockton side to grab the initiative
and win easily smashing in six well taken goals. In spite of a fine penalty
taken by player manager Paul Davis which gave some temporary optimism,
lack of concentration and lack of consistent shape proved the OBs' undoing
although the spirit of the team still gives cause for optimism.
23rd September 2006
Coundon Court OBFC 1 Dunlop 1
The OBs continued to show the fighting spirit which has marked their faltering
progress this season. Compared with the fine performance of the previous
week, the team's poor first half performance was characterised by a lethargic,
half-hearted tempo where the players were mere shadows of their true ability.
Going behind to a fine struck goal in the first half was a reflection
of the game in which Dunlop had the edge. But the second half saw the
OBs achieve a glimmer of their potential when fine running by Knight and
Isherwood produced the cross which Leigh Francis gleefully smashed into
the far corner. Pressing for the winner Frankie Bennett scored what looked
like a perfect goal only to adjudged offside by the Dunlop linesman -
much to the incredulity of the spectators and players on both sides. The
team clearly missed the suspended Gareth Coleman but the OBs are now three
games unbeaten which speaks volumes about their gradual improvement. Danny
Kettle made an impressive second half appearance stealing the man-of-the-match
plaudits.
Coundon Court Reserves 2 Potters Green 2
An excellent first twenty minutes should have been the herald of a convincing
win with goals from impressive rookie Jaynes and veteran Tom King. But
two flattering late goals from the Potters settled the game in a disa[ppointing
draw. However, good performances from Casey(Matt's cousin) and young Sean
Kettle point to a bright future for manager Paul Davis whose optimism
and hard work have generated such a positive atmosphere within the club.
September 30 2006
Coundon Court OBFC 6 Peugeot 3 CET Challenge Cup
Even without seven 1st. team regulars the OBs scored six fine goals
to maintain their outstanding record against Peugeot. The news that so
many were either unfit or unavailable dur to work would have daunted the
most optimistic of managers but Ricky Smith and Paul Davis managed to
put out two sides without experiencing more harrowing panic attacks than
usual.
With Wayne Bowes returning in goal, and Miles, Finn, O'Dwyer, Woodruff,
Kelly and Jones coming into the squad the team did not appear to have
the necessary balance. But Ricky Smith has devloped a never-say-die spirit
in his sides and clearly it was in evidence today. With a back line whose
average age was thirty-six the opposition were always likely to score
goals. And so it proved . It was therefore a pleasure for the vociferous
spectators to relish such outstanding goal-scoring from a rampant attack
with PaulO'Dwyer stealing the man-of-the-match award.
Isherwood and O'Dwyer clearly enjoy playing up front; O'Dwyer is difficult
to shake off the ball and "Ish" works off him on either wing.
O'Dwyer raced into the box to head his first from Isherwood's first time
cross and for his second met another from the right with a 30 yard half
volley. Not to be outdone Isherwood shot a fierce drive into the corner
of the net from an O'Dwyer pass and crowned his day with a spectaular
30 yard volley. That made it 4-2. Trevor Knight met a cross from twin
Phil to tap the ball in, and after fine work from wily Frank Bennett sub
Jones headed a fine goal making the final pulsating scoreline 6-3.
A pleased manager commented: " A poor first half is becoming our
hallmark but we worked for better possession in the second and deserved
this victory with scintillating goal finishes. We all look forward to
the next round."
Coundon Court OBFC 0 Bourton & Frankton 7
An incredible scoreline if it weren't for the fact that the team had lost
half a dozen players and were fortunate to put out a side. For once Manager
Paul Davis was almost lost for words when contemplating this awful cup
result and his lightweight side and performance. Better luck next week
penny.
8th October 2006
Coundon Court OBFC Reserves 3 Ambleside 2
The OBs' reserves redeemed themselves after a shocking display
the previous week by achieving a fine result in this CET Junior first
round. With a powerful display by Peter Jaynes in defence who was now
recovered from injury and a highly promising performance from sixteen-yar
oldman-of-the-match Darren Mohan partnering him, the defence was more
secure, and the all-round passing more accurate and determinwed. It was
left to Ian Gayton to score from a wonderful free-kick from 25 yards and
in the second half two opportunist goals from the energetic and skilful
Jamie Hall to secure a nail-biting victory over a resilient Ambleside
squad.
14th Ocober 2006
Coundon Court OBFC 2 Dunlop 4 Coventry Charity
Cup
Last year's victorious cup winners at the Ricoh lost to a fine
Dunlop side whose passing and excellent team play especially in the first
half was the decisive factor.
But two blatant handballs in the Dunlop box went unpunished by the referee
and two bad offside decisions accepted when the the OBs had scored seemingly
legal goals .
So the score could have been so different with the OBs making a fight
of it in the second half with excellent goals by Paul O'Dwyer and Mark
Hodgkins. But on the positive side a fine debut by Gardiner at right back
and McKeown making his first team debut gave further cause for optimism
in what has been an eventful start to the season.
CCOBFC Reserves 4 Bedworth Ex-Service 2
Dominant throughout the game, manager Paul Davis was satisfied with a
good team performance where Mohan and debut boy Turbitt were outstanding.
Goals from Gayton, Jones, Turbitt and Davis showed just what this team
is capable of achieving as manager Davis moulds together a squad full
of character.

Coundon Court 0 Stockton 4
Stockton are fast becoming the OBs' bogey team. In this Birmingham Vase
first round the OBs were no match for a free-running Stockton side. Without
central defender Matt Casey and Steve Haymes in defence along with midfield
general Frankie Bennett and Lee Francis up front , the team lacked any
cohesion and deserved to lose.
Coundon Court OB Reserves 1 Copsewood 5 Foleshill Charity Cup
The Obs produced a competitive performance against a strong Copsewood

with manager Paul Davis grabbing the only OBs' goal.
28th October 2006
Coundon (first) 1 v 2 Alvis
With Gareth Coleman and Phil Knight still suspended Coundon gave
a debut to Hibbert in the middle of the park. Coundon failed to settle
early on and it was no surprise to see them fall behind mid way through
the first half, at half time the score was still 1 – 0 to Alvis,
and Coundon were lucky only to be that far adrift. In the second half
Coundon raised their game with Casey marshalling the defence superbly
and Finn continually probing Coundon eventually drew level with 10 minutes
to go Isherwood slotting home the equaliser after latching on to a Curly
Coleman through ball. Coundon went in search of a winner and had a few
chances to win the game in the last few minutes, but hearts were broken
as Alvis advanced up the field and stole the game with a winner with less
than 90 seconds to go.
Coundon (2nd team) 0 v 1 Coventry University
Coundon were out of sorts in the first half and lacked shape as they were
outplayed by their pacey opponents. After a half time talking to by manager
Davis, Coundon emerged for the second half with a steely determination;
they dominated the midfield and kept a good shape, Coundon were unlucky
not to take the lead on a few occasions as they spurned several good chances,
this cost Coundon dear as like the first team they lost out to a last
minute goal.
4th November 2006
Coundon (first team) 1 v 3 Bedworth Ex servicemen
Coundon started the game at a furious pace and should have been
two up within 15 minutes as both Knight and Isherwood missed glorious
chances. Coundon continued to dominate the first half, but fell behind
against the run of play when they failed to clear a Bedworth ex’s
corner properly. Coundon started the second half pretty much like the
first and for all the pressure and chances it was Bedworth Ex who increased
there lead through a freak goal which took and unkind bobble before going
through the legs of the unfortunate keeper. Coundon didn’t let there
heads drop and pulled a goal back through O’Dwyer, as Coundon pushed
on for an equaliser, Bedworth Ex made the game safe from a free kick which
appeared. Manager Ricky Smith was upbeat despite the defeat thanks to
the overall performance.
Coundon (2nd team) 1 v 7 Brinklow – (Cup
game)
A game to forget for the Coundon second, player manager Davis grabbing
the consolation goal.
11th November 2006
Coundon (1st team) 2 v 2 Mount Nod Highway
With O’Dwyer missing manager Ricky Smith gave Hegarty his
debut after signing in midweek ironically from today’s opponents.
On a cold day Coundon more than matched the opposition who currently sit
top of the league and have been champions for the past two seasons. With
each side cancelling each other out, chances were few and far between,
however Highway took the lead when Coundon didn’t clear a corner
a properly. Highway held on to their lead till half time. In the second
half Coundon started to press more and rewarded their small but vocal
following when the lanky Gareth Coleman rose like a salmon to head home
from a corner. Coundon were now the dominant team and kept possession
at will, it was therefore no surprise to see them take the lead, Trevor
Knight charged down the left with his new wind resistance hair do, and
crossed invitingly for substitute Mark Hodgkins to head into the back
of the net. Coundon thought they had done enough to bag all three points
but as has been there luck lately Highway snatched a share of the spoils
with a last minute goal that took several deflections before finding the
target. Manager Ricky Smith was absolutely delighted with the performance
and now thinks this should be the level of performance the first team
are aiming for every week.
Coundon Res 3 Brinklow 1
After being humbled by Brinklow the previous week in the Telegraph cup
Coundon manager Paul Davis opted for a more defensive approach recalling
Kenny and Harkin to fill in at full back where previously wing-backs had
been deployed. After a cut and thrust half hour Coundon took the lead
and never looked back and 3 goals should have been doubled but for poor
finishing and excellent keeping from the Brinklow skipper in goal.
Goals from King (age42) Davis (30) and Mohan(16), his first for the club
since rising from the youth team ranks, emphasised the blend of youth
and experience that runs through the side. A late consolation for the
away side could not spoil the party at the "Caravan End" and
John Davenport awarded man of the match Mohan a free weekend stay for
4 in the new corporate
hospitality suite owned by the club.
19th November 2006
Bulkington 2 v 2 Coundon
On a windy day in Bulkington Coundon faced an uphill struggle after
finding themselves 1-0 down from a long throw in after less than a minute
played. Not only were Coundon playing into a strong wind but the bright
November sun, was in their eyes too, so it showed much character when
Gareth Coleman managed to fire home from a corner to draw Coundon level.
Sadly though Coundon couldn’t hold out till half time and Bulkington
grabbed their second goal of the half from a long throw in almost identical
to the first goal. In the second half with the wind and the sun on their
backs Coundon dominated for long periods and it was no surprise when Frankie
Bennett finished superbly to net the equaliser, for all Coundon’s
domination they could not find a way through the Bulkington rearguard
for a much needed winner, however the overall performance was satisfactory.
9 Dec 2006
Coundon Court OBFC 1 Witherley United 0
Beneath the darkening gloom of a December afternoon it perhaps could have
been appreciated if the Obs, missing a number of key players, would not
have relished such an encounter against the potential Premier leaders.
The key core of the team was missing in the figures of injured Frankie
Bennett, Peter Hegarty suffering and studying goalkeeper Carl Pyket. So
Ricky Smith almost frantic with worry brought in
new signing and ex Coundon Court student Ross Chambers along with Mattie
Upton. Also welcomed back was Gareth Coleman after flu with Hodges and
Haymes on the bench.
Adversity breeds tenacity in the face of necessity!! The Dunkirk spirit
appeared when least expected. In the freezing conditions with the sun
hiding behind slate-grey ominous clouds, the Obs put on a performance
to whet the most jaded of football appetites. Here we witnessed passion,
here was character, here an undaunted desire to win against all odds.
Suddenly it did not seem to matter that 90% of last year’s squad
had upped sticks for pastures new leaving the Obs with the residue of
a side. These lads wanted to play for each other and play for the Obs.
Mutley was outstanding in goal bringing off remarkable saves for a player
of his vintage. Casey and Coleman inspire throughout the game becoming
increasingly dominant, tackling at critical moments in the game and remaining
calm with fine balls from the defence to set up the midfield. Casey’s
leadership as captain stirs the emotions and he leads by example. Coleman’s
tackling combined with his instinctive positional play enabled him to
foil many of Witherley’s more creative moments. His brother Craig
matched him with long, perfectly struck passes with his astute left foot.
Finn too with the Knight twins constantly battled winning the ball with
vigour and using space intelligently. New boy Chambers showed why so many
clubs valued his talents when he left school. He has matured into a confidently
creative midfield player who has the ability to take on defenders and
make a telling pass. Rhodes too worked quietly in defence, one memorable
50-yard pass to the wing nearly producing a goal for Isherwood.
And it was Ishie who played his best game. Tenacious in defending his
quarter, and
effervescent on the wing his energy was a constant menace to the Witherley
defence.
The stalemate of an hour was broken however when Finn cleverly won the
ball 40 yards out and raced for the by-line winning a corner by dint of
his aggression. An astute corner was headed towards goal hitting the bar
and rebounding out to the young debut boy Matti Upton who lashed in an
unstoppable drive. Witherley upped the tempo with wave after wave of attacks
but the defence held out magnificently and when the final whistle blew
it was as though the Phoenix had risen again to give us all the belief
as assistant manager Hodgey put it, “ that we’re as good as
any other team, we’ve just got to believe it!”
CCOBFC Reserves 1 Coventry University 8
In this first round cup tie the Obs were only 1-2 down at half time and
should have maintained the momentum into the second half but sloppy defending
led to a blitz of goals which did not ultimately reflect the hard work
of some of the players. Paul Davis scored again.
16th December 2006
Coundon Court 0 Copsewood 4
Without Gareth Coleman and Ross Chambers the OBs were unbalanced in midfield
but the final score in no way reflected the true nature of the performance.
Hitting the bar twice and encountering the world class saves of the Copsewood
keeper summarised the OBs' day
when luck just wasn't with them. Added to this every goal scored was down
to schoolboy errors and bore no resemblance to the previous week's tremendous
victory over Witherley.
But the OBs kept trying, never gave up and the spirit remains and hopefully
will enable the club to remain in the Premier.
CCOBFC Reserves 2 Bulkington 2
With Miles back in goal the OBs fought back from 0-2 down to produce a
heart-warming display with two fine goals from Jones in a second half
display which restored manager Paul Davis' belief that the team could
go the whole way.
6th January 2007
Coundon Court OBFC 2 Alvis 6
In heavy conditions the OBs were up against a vastly improved Alvis squad
whose spped of running, quick passing and passion overwhelmed an OBs'
side that was rusty through lack of recent games. Fielding a nearly full
strength team manager RickySmith was pleased to welcome back Paul O'Dwyer
whose equalising and finely taken goal gave the OBs some hope of making
a fight of it. But the opponents were not to be stopped and in spite of
a fine goal by Isherwood in the second half who came off the bench,a lack
of discipline combined with erratic goal keeping sealed the OBs' fate.
27 January 2007
CCOBFC 0 Copsewood 4
After the lengthy lay-off of the past few weeks it was no surprise
to see the OBs in disarray. In spite of all their efforts, they lacked
the essential pace necessary to counter a fairly average Copsewood squad
whose four goals were easily scored. Questions need to be asked about
the OBs' fitness and perhaps whether they were affected by the news of
manager Ricky Smith's imminent departure to Bristol. But it is puzzling
to watch a performance of such lacklustre and contrast it to the rip-roaring
achievement of a few weeks ago against Witherley!!
CCOBFC Reserves 2 Christ the King 1
A fine performance by a young side against local rivals Kings. With a
first - time shot by manager Paul Davis and a stunning goal by 16 year
old Harkin after a shot by veteran Tom King, there was clearly cause for
optimism. Woodcroft was welcomed back on his return from the wilderness
of work and made an appearance on the bench. There were most encouraging
performances from young McKeown and Mohan - sons of former players!
3rd Febuary 2007
CCOBFC 3 Stockton 2
In this vital game which the OBs had to win against old rivals Stockton,
the ultimate victory was all the more heart warming in that it was a rare
victory over Stockton and displayed just what the team can achieve when
it digs deep and reveals its character. Because it was character that
won this nail-biting match. With young Smith coming in a right back (
surely an omen) and Rhodes, Miles and P Kinght on the bench, the OBs drew
level with a wonderful volley from man of the match Gaz "Mince"
Coleman which zoomed into the top left corner. But Stockton pulled ahead
yet again after sloppy midfield indecision led to an easily taken goal.
Heads seemed to drop but two fine saves from keeper Pyket and a rallying
display of gutsy power play from Gaz Coleman raised the tempo of the OBs'
play. With ten minutes to the final whistle a subtle corner from Trevor
Kinght beat the floundering keeper for a deserved equaliser. Spirits were
up as the OBs strove for victory.Impressive running by the midfield and
moving as a whole unit the team pressed forward relentlessly. Gaz Coleman
it was whose powerful header crashed againast the cross bar and following
up debut boy Smith volleyed the ball home with a minute to go. The OBs
now need to maintain the momentum of victories to attempt to ensure that
Premier fotball remains
CCOBFC Reserves 1 Stockton 4
A lone solo goal by veteran Tom King was the only achievement of a game
in which
Stockton maintained their usual dominance over the OBs..
February 17th 2007
Coundon Court OBFC 0 Stockton 1
In this vital game it was disappointing that three key players
Pyket, Bennett and Craig Coleman were unavailable but it was a measure
of the team's spirit that only a single, lucky goal separated the teams
at the end of this classic battle. With Aadam Smith playing a stormer
at right back and now making the position his own along with a fitter
and enthusiaticStuart Rhodes, the OBs welcomed back Kirk Miller whose
inspirational play was a fillip to the whole team who raised their game
accordingly. With Ross Chambers and Paul Jones hardworking in midfield
and Gaz Coleman uncompromising and supportive throughout, it looked a
promising first half with no quarter given by each side. Miles in goal
made some fine saves and although the OBs were helped by the post and
some wayward shooting by a confident Stockton team, there was an air of
optimism especially displayed by the running of Kettle and Knight. But
it was Stockton who took the lead with ten minutes to go. Unluckily the
ball bounced off the post straight to a Stockton player who lashed the
ball home. Undeterred the OBs pounded the Stockton goal with Isherwood
inches wide only for Gaz Coleman to be sent off for a professional foul
with five minutes left.
It was vital to win this game but the spirit of the OBs continues to shine
bright and hopefully it will see them through to the end.
March 10th 2007
Coundon Court 0 Mount Nod 3
A lay-off of nearly a month was not helpful or indeed the right
match preparation for
for a game of this importance.. Points were vital and there to be won
but after holding their own for twenty minutes the OBs capitulated producing
an unrecognisable display which was letrhargic, sloppy and half-hearted.
However, it was a bonus to see Richard Davis return to the fold and show
glimpses of his quality along with new goalkeeper signing Dave Evans.
CCOBFC Reserves 2 Brinklow 5
Two one up at half time with goals from Lewis and Woodruff the OBs fully
desrved their lead but erratic goalkeeping by the usually reliable Cartwright
proved the OBs' undoing and thus it was a sombre team and manager who
returned to the club.
Saturday 17th March 2007
CCOBFC 2 Witherley 3
With seven players unavailable and a fixture against the Premier
leaders it could be understood if the team left the Coundon club feeling
rather wary. But such is the spirit of the OBs and such is the enthusiasm
of managers Hodgie and Dave that the team performed beyond all expectations.
With new keeper Evans producing a fine , mature display ably supported
by a tigerish defence in new boy McCarthy, Haymes and Rhodes, the midfield
of Chambers and Jones along with young Harkin gradually gained in confidence.
Young Williams and Lewis also played their parts in making life difficult
for the powerful Witherley side. With a fine golal from Rhodes from a
free kick and an Isherwood special the OBs had fought back to make it
all square but with seconds to go a lucky overhead kick gave Witherley
the match much to manager Hodgie's despair on the line having come off
after 70 minutes to be replaced by up and coming youngster McFadyen.
CCOBFC Reserves 1 Coventry University 4
The OBs played some attractive football and it was to the manager's credit
that he had been able to raise a side. It was only when they were reduced
to 10 men that the ineveitable superiority of the opponents came to the
fore with three more goals. Tom King scored yet another goal in his long
and illustrious career!!
Saturday 23rd March 2007
CCOBFC 1 Bedworth Ex 1
This was a fine result if somewhat disappointing in that the opponents
only equalised with ten minutes to go. Still it was another point in the
increasingly desperate struggle to avoid relegation. However, there are
considerable positives : Evans in goal is gaining in confidence pulling
off some notable saves. With McCarthy at the back as sweeper the OBs have
found a player to rival the quality of Kirk Miller. His timing and indeed
time on the ball allied with a superb range of passing ploys makes him
a great acquisition. The same can be said of young 16 year old Harkin.
Lithe and lightweight, his distribution and tireless running
reflect an amazing maturity. He is one for the future and along with the
other youngsters
confirm the manager's wisdom in turning to youthful enthusiasm and commitment.
The Obs' first goal scored by Paul Jones reflected this enthusiam for
winning the ball by dint of a fierce tackle he struck the ball with an
opportunist's instinct to put the OBs one up in the frist ten minutes. It
was nip and tuck from then on until the Exs scored that vital goal.
There is a good future ahead if the manager can weave his magic touch
into next season by developing this emphasis on youth.
CCOBFC Reserves 3 GNP 5
With a superb hat-trick from Loz Woodruff the OBs battled hard against
the division leaders
with Tom King playing his 499th game.
Saturday 31st March
CCOBFC 2 Stockingford 0
It was a vital victory especially against fellow strugglers Stockingford.
But things are looking up. No defeat for two games and gaining four points
from six. Manager Mark Hodgkins is convinced that there is cause for optimism
and no ione would argue with that. With Evans contiunuing to be competent
and brave in goal and with another man-of-the-match performance from Mickey
McCarthy this performance reflected the newly found energy and spirit
which has come alive in the form of self-belief created by the young players
in the squad. In particular young 16 year old Harkin who ran his heart
out and Mark Willams (see photo) who scored a carcking goal characterised
this tenacious spirit. It was almoast too good to be true when Trevor
Kinght delivered a telling ball to Isherwood who cleverly lobbed the keeper
to put the OBs one ahead in the opening minutes. But Stockingford were
no pushover. They pushed up creating manay good chances only for the Dunkirk
spirit of the team to hold out. This was even more in evidence in the
second half but the OBs took advantage of their opponents all-out surging
attacks to score with minutes to go. A long ball belted up front found
young Williams who used his speed and good control to blast the ball past
the keeper to cement a well won victory
CCOBFC Reserves 1 Bulkington 2
Another defeat which should have been a victory . With another man-of-the-match
performance from Turbitt and anotherr goal from Wooduff, this game was
further remembered for TOM KING'S 500TH. PERFORMANCE... a true member
of the club, loyal, talented and a great bloke.
7th April 2007
CCOBFC 1 Peugeot 3
After a strong performance last Saturday optimism was high. But it was
not to be a performance which generated hope. Admittedly the OBs created
chances but many were missed and in spite of Jones' good goal after strong
work from man-of-the-match Trevor Knight which brought the scores level,
the sending off of Isherwood for swearing and two injuries to vital players
were enogh to disheaten the most hard-working of the team. Three points
would have created some light at the end of the relegation tunnel but
now the storm clouds are gathering.....but as Hodgie always says, "It's
all good......"
CCOBFC Reserves 4 Hillmorton1
A fine display by this young side managed by Kenny and Hemmings in the
absence of manager Davis saw an impressive performance from man-of-the-match
Mohan and a brace each from Phil Knight and Loz Woodruff. Well done lads.
Keep it up.
10th April 2007
CCOBFC0 Dunlop3
It was not for the want of trying. Even with a number of players unavailable
for this evening game because of injury and work commitments, the workrate
could not be faulted. Matt Upton returned to slot into centre back with
Loz Woodruff up front and Phil Knight back.
A slip-up in defence let Dunlop through for their first goal but in spite
of tactical changes at half-time which certainly caught the Dunlop defence
by surprise, time and again the forwards failed to score from promising
raids leaving the defence exposed which resulted in wide open opportunities
which Dunlop easily converted. However, the spirit could not be faulted.
14th April 2007
CCOBFC 1 Christ the King 8
The score says it all. Outplayed, the gulf in class showed. However, there
was a promising start when Isherwood scored what looked like the goal
of the season placing the ball from twenty yards to put the OBs one up
and generate considerable optimism. But soon the writing was on the wall.
With at least six regulars unavailable through injury and suspensions,
manager Hodgie had to play himself in an experimental team with Williams
arriving to take his place at half-time. There was a welcome back too
for Leigh Francis after along "lay-off". On a postive note most
of the lads never gave up and with goalie Dave Evans producing a string
of fine saves the OBs look to next season with the foundation of a fine
spirit and youthful enthusiasm.
CCOBFC Reserves 4 AEI Rugby 4
It was difficult for manager Davis to field a side but he produced a miracle
with the OBs
creating four fine goals from veteran man-of-the-match Tom King(2) , Loz
Woodruff and Brown.
22nd April 2007
CCOBFC 0 Stockingford 3
It's nearly all over. It is now!!!!!!!!!! Six years in the Premier, twenty
years getting there, and now with one game to go it's truly over. TheOBs
have played their hearts out, everyone has pulled together in this difficult
year and yet it was doomed from the beginning. With only weeks to go before
the season started, there were no managers, few players and a sense of
despair. But such is the spirit in this unique club that miracles happened.
The managers came forth, the players assembled, fixtures started. Two
sides played every Saturday.
So what does the future hold? The managers are in place, the players keen
to put things right next season, the committee working hard in the background
setting up the new venue at the Coventrians.
As for the game. Well it could have been 5 goals each if the OBs forwards
had their shooting boots on. In fact the team played some of its best
football spurred on in no little measure by the return of Virg McGregor,
a class act. Leigh Francis too showed his enormous potential not only
in his intelligent running and physical presence but also his dynamic
speed which if he signs on next season should terrorise the Div.1 teams.
28th April 2007
CCOBFC Reserves 2 Christ the King 1
An encouraging result to take the tream to safety in the Alliance.
One nil down the OBs fought back with a much more determined attitude
in the second half with Hemmings outstanding in defence showing a grittiness
and enthusiasm to belie his advanced years.
Loz Woodruff scored a fine equaliser after good work by sub Kettle and
this galvanised the side. Hard work was rewarded when a free kick was
accurately slotted home by manager Davis from thirty yards to claim a
well-won victory. It was good to see Dick Hoare running the line. Keeping
up with play his superb decisions based on years of experience were considered
by many to be a significant contribution to this victory!!
4th May 2007
CCOBFC 0 Woodlands 3
After a good first half in which the OBs matched Woodlands and created
a few chances, tiredness took its toll and three goals were conceded.
Without the regular pairing of Casey and McCarthy in the middle of defense
it was perhaps inevitable that the OBs would find the challenge too much
but there was considerable cause for optimism and manager Mark Hodgkins
looks forward to next season at the Covents!
CCOBFC Reserves 2 Potters Green 4
A fine first thirty muinutes in which the OBs dominated the game. A terrific
goal from hard-working Scott Bradley and a fine right foot volley from
outside the box by veteran Steve Taggart put the OBs two goals up. Taggart's
volley was reminiscent of his finest goals years ago and this was no exception.
With uncanny positional timing he charged forward meeting Bradley's astute
cross with deadly precision celebrating in his unique style and providing
him with another anecdote to put a smile on all our faces. But two penalties
and some farcical defending put Potters in the ascendancy. However, there
were encouraging displays which augur well for next season.
12th May 2007
CCOBFC RESERVES 4 Hillmorton 4
In this penultimate game of the season, the OBs produced a fine fightback
coming from 0-2 down to snatch a draw with a magnificent equaliser from
Arron McFadyen to level the scoreline with minutes to go. In between farcical
defensive errors in which Mick Hemmings was nevertheless outstanding both
attacking and defending , two goals from a hard working Phil Knight and
a solo from twin Trevor saved the day.

Sunshine Sunday when the temperatures rose to
the occasion of the inaugural Coundon Court Old Boys' FC Six-a-side
gala day.
The Civic party from Parkes in Australia graced the occasion having
enjoyed a tour around the historic OLD HOUSE of George Singer fame
conducted by our own historian President Richard Hoare.
They enjoyed watching the high standard of soccer played by the
invited Coventry teams. The day was eventually won by Highway who
were thus the first to be presented with the new and prestigious
SINGER cup.
Such was the success of the day that it will now become an annual
event.
Congratulations to Chairman Mark Collins, Sheila Collins and Arthur
Waugh who along with new boy Robin and evergreen Wayne Shanks and
their band of volunteers must feel gratified on their first venture
into gala day territory. |

By now you will all have seen and read about the appalling destruction
of the Northbrook Sports & Social Club. To look at the mangled
mess on Sunday morning in the companyof Sean McNulty and his brothers
Seamus and Martin and along with our own committee, Davo, Dick,
Dave, Greg and Pop, made us realise how vulnerable we all are
these days. But human nature is ever optimistic and soon there
was talk of rebuilding, plans discussed, insurance gauged, decisions
tentatively made. Underpinning all of this was a spirit determined
to start again against all the odds, determined to create an even
better club, determined to show the local community what JFK and
Coundon Court Old Boys' FC are made of.............................."
Clearly we will start the season in August. The annual dinner
& presentation evening will go ahead on June 17th. So check
this website for further news.
Hopefully we will meet down at the Northbrook soon when the new
marquee& bar are erected. Work starts almost immediately on
a brand new, state of the art club which could be in place very
quickly. Until then all the lads and the new signings are meeting
at the Nuggett on Saturdays........
Tango has been appointed as General Manager/Director of Football
with Loz Cairns as co-manager of the First Team and Quey, Greg
and others managing the 2nd. team.
The dinner & presentation night is still on the 17th June
7 for 7.30. Pay Pop as soon as possible. Training starts on Saturday
25th June at 1 o'clock down at the Northbrook.

The victory will
do much to give the side a confidence to start the assault on the Premier
title.
